Absolutely loving KinesicMouse. Finally, accurate and broad range of analogue and switch inputs!

Onto my point, I just bought an iPhone XR and I'm experiencing some overheating issues.

I suspect this is caused by the iPhone XR's LED screen. Other models, like the iPhone X have an OLED screen, which I am led to believe generate less heat than the LED counterparts.

Given my condition, I tend to have the house warmer, which certainly won't be helping the issue. I wonder if anyone else is experiencing such issues?

My frame rate drops to 30 FPS when the phone overheats, which I fear will impede on the accuracy of KinesicMouse.

Looking forward to hearing from my new favourite community!!

Hi slamajam,

great to hear that you like the KM.

I have an iPhone 13 Pro and it occasionally drops the framerate to 30fps due to temperature. The previous depth camera based KinesicMouse versions also worked with 30fps. You can read about the temperature issue in the FAQ thread.

If you are using the iPhone as dedicated KM sensor you can maybe stick adheasive heatsinks to the back of the phone.

For the display I will try to incorporate a function to turn the display of the iPhone off. The Unreal Engine Documentation describes a network command, to turn off the display while tracking still continues to work. This will save heat and battery.

Will let you know, when there are new updates,
I would love to hear about the progress you make with the KM,
Best,

M

Hi,

The camera button on the upper right corner of the face app allows you to turn off the camera display.
You can even hide the interface in the preferences of the app to have a perfect black screen while in use.

The phone still gets warm, but regulates his temperature itself.

As for the reactivity between 30 and 60 fps, I don't see much difference.

Regards,

Just sending this message with my new fancy set up using KinesicMouse and IRIS combined together :) very happy.

I actually did a side-by-side comparison with my iPhone XR with a IPhone 11 pro. Both of them thermal throttled at exactly the same time And exhibited virtually exactly the same thermal performance. I don't expect much as changed from the 11 to the 12 and the 13, but I might be wrong.

I think the heatsink idea is perfect. I've already been turning off all unnecessary overlays and turning the brightness way down. I'm not really bothering putting the phone into low battery mode, as I don't believe it will make that much of a difference, In my testing.

30 FPS is generally fine for me as well but as I get faster and start Chaining commands, I think wants as much accuracy as I can get. Double-click is a good example.

I'm gonna go for this one : https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09CGTLDB7/

Seems to be smaller and sticks to the phone. More effective on my setting.

I'll let you know :)

Just tried the 40 mm heat sinks, as recommended above. They work a treat. No overheating issues even in super warm conditions.

At some point, I might try some fit the back of an XR better But this is just a cosmetic improvement

I tried the mini fan and it worked great, one drawback, I have to unplug it when the phone is not in use.

I also tested the heatsinks. I stuck two of them on the phone but it still heats. Less than before though.

Maybe I haven't bought the right ones or maybe I should stick a third one.

I have 4 on mine. It's not pretty, because they overlap around the edge but I basically never get overheating issues and if I do it's because I have the fireplace on and it's like a sauna
